About Your Hosts, Bill & Jill Cavaliere

Bill Cavaliere moved to the Portal area back in 1978. He worked first as a volunteer at the Southwest Research Station, then was employed with the US Forest Service in the Chiricahua Mountains, where one of his favorite duties was manning the Barfoot fire lookout. He eventually went into a career in law enforcement, all of it on the border, from which he retired after 28 years. He is the former sheriff of Hidalgo County, NM, just across the state line from Portal. He is an avid birder, is president of the Cochise County Historical Society, and has had articles published in historical journals and magazines such as Wild West. Bill is the author of the book The Chiricahua Apaches — A Concise History.

Jill Cavaliere hails from “just down the road” in Rodeo, New Mexico and is a lifelong resident of the area. She is a registered nurse, obtaining her degree in 2003, and is employed as a home health nurse in the area. Jill enjoys travelling as well as meeting people from all over the world, and looks forward to making your stay at the Four Bar Cottages an enjoyable one.
